Inside the frame by Brandon Evans

This is a favovorite of mine in the moment collection on Flickr

Hard to determine truth in a moment’s glance.

The rigid brick wall, shadows marching in a straight line, hands clasped tight behind back and the prohibitive chain link fence give rise to thoughts of discipline, an almost prison-like scene.

But in reality it’s far from it.

Our roaming photographer captured this image on Friday, Nov. 4, at Alvord Elementary after an event honoring veterans. Students were headed back to class following a thoughtful presentation in the gymnasium.

Discipline is not far off the chart though. School introduces structure, assignments and conformity. It punishes tardiness, mayhem and disrespect.

Ismael Fraga, a fourth grader at Alvord Elementary, gives a curious glance over his shoulder as he marches dutifully back to class. The fence to the right frames the subject. His camouflage shirt in a sense relates to the veterans just honored. And the shadows on the wall create depth.

A moment’s glance can distort truth. Time tells much. And perception isn’t everything.
