The key to making this work with water is a super fast shutter speed , these were shot and a shutter speed of 1600 af4, ISO 200, not a whole lot of light coming out of the little sb at those settings but if you’re close enough, the water will be crystal-clear sharp the back row will be out of focus and will have just enough pop to separate your subject from their background, and give that little gleam in their eye.
