Taken for Granite!

October 13, 2009

Have more images on file of the Wise County Courthouse than any other single subject than I can think of.  That big chunk of granite sticks up from just about any place in Wise County, and I’ve shot from most of them.  There’s none better to create a sense of place.

Recently I was asked to make a photo of the historic landmark for the Decatur Civic Center, three foot by three foot.

Problem: Since some of the photos were took in the first age of digital, I couldn’t find one that held together well enough, that large, to put my name on it.

Solution: more photos. Does two things, got the best reproduction from each photo, and gave a little broader view of the old castle on the hill.

I still continue to shoot the old landmark, even after all these years.  It always amazes me with it’s changing colors, and power over the Wise County skyline.

Great idea…. it proves that a single photo rarely captures the many viewpoints of a landmark — after all, we all see from a different point, at a different time, with different experiences … each moment is thus unique.
