Remembering Miss Moss

June 15, 2012

One of my favorite illustrations in a while comes in the form of Wise County’s version of the Breakfast Club. Group portraits can always be challenging with time constraints, on location and more than one teenager, but this one went off without a hitch. I attribute that to this group of young people and like them, the story that they have is equally as impressive. You see this group of kids were in the fifth grade class of Mrs. Moss, who was involved in a freak accident that took her life seven years ago. These kids still carry her memory and what she stood for, I don’t think any of us could wish for a more positive outcome!

The setuop was quite simple actually, not what I had planned on.  I loaded all my portable lights from powerpacks to five foot octagon softboxes. I had this elaborate light setup in my head and after getting there and seeing large white walls, the better to bounce off of, I scaled it down to a realistic doable portrait, given the allotted time period. The goal, afterall, was to simulate morning light, so bounced one sb-900 at 1/2 power of wall on camera left and second light camera right, 1/4 power through hand held lastolite. I tend to work better with less in my old age, reduce options and make the most of what I have.
