Photo motivation

October 24, 2019

So… What motivates you to shoot photos?

For years as a photojournalist I was motivated by seeing something in print with my name under it, it gave the tangible evidence that I was there and captured my vision, validation of time spent in the moment. There’s something about people getting there picture in the paper that spurs that extra desire to do something awesome because it’s in the news. That made my job a lot easier to create greatness and use the energy of the subject to visually tell my story.

Fast forward some months, I find now that it is more about the energy that we build together during the shoot that drives me, the desire to make a photo better than the last. As well I’m shooting for a variety of publications, which of course have the same draw as previous years.

What does all this have to do with photography? Philosophy and logistics of shooting is a large part of my work, I feel like I have to be constantly refining my methods and knowing what drives you to shoot lets you hone in on your strengths.

As I have mentioned before in previous blogs, each shoot has it’s own energy. Being able to discern that energy rapidly gives you more time to connect with your subject and what they’re feeling, add your own perspective and boom, your there.
