Passing it on…..
July 1, 2010
Had a chance to teach a summer photo camp this year at the library in Decatur,Texas. What a trip. I’ve spoke to classes at the Elementary, Middle schools and High schools in Wise County, taught at College for a while, taught at art clubs in the area, but nothing could have prepared me for the intensity of 12 forth and fifth graders.
The Idea was to have each kid bring their camera of choice and know a little something about it. For three hours a day we would talk about Images, go out and shoot, come back in and look at everybody’s images and do it all over again the next day.
I have to say it was even more fulfilling than I could have imagined, the intensity and speed at which a motivated kid with a camera learns is unbelievable. Schedule? That went out the window the first day, gratefully so, because a big kid at heart, I hate schedules. So I fell back on what I do best, go with the flow.
The Idea was to show the kids their own personal vision, enhance it, learn how to record it without getting to bogged down in all the technical mumbo jumbo. As it turned out, the kids didn’t need a whole lot of instruction in that area.
Above Photo was shot by Ben Lunday, a quite, thinking type of shooter, who loves abstracts, we got along great. All the kids turned in fantastic work, and improved by leaps and bounds. It’s amazing how fast they pick up stuff, especially when there are no bounds, just shoot what you feel!
For me, I got a great dose of younging up, and a fresh look at the magic of photography!
