Nikon D6 = Awesomeness, Equipment changes
November 30, 2020
First glance of the Nikon D6 looks like a Nikon D5 with the exception of the dome top, but don’t let that fool you. Under the hood it houses GPS and Wi-fi, connect to smart device as well as faster focusing and ease of manipulating settings. It still feels like the D5 which is my all-time favorite camera.
Last weekend I put it to the test shooting the PBR World Finals on Thursday night, Stockyards coliseum
Friday and Saturday for the Cowgirl Gathering, Stockyards Pro Rodeo Friday and Saturday night. I shot with both the D5 and D6 which worked seamless together. I recorded roughly 4000 images when all was said and done and was not disappointed by the D6″s performance at all.
I have shot with the 5 for a couple of years and wanted to upgrade my four year old Nikon D4s. Now days it’s not just important to take the best image but have it up first as well. Given the fact that the controls are virtuously identical, it makes changing settings much more intuitive. The Snap bridge app is much better than previous models as well as on D850 after upgrade.
I have never been disappointed by Nikon cameras and am looking forward to a long-lasting relationship with the D6.
I have shot Profoto lights for last 10 years in studio, the old Acute 600’s but they are still going strong. This year I switched from Nikon SB5000 to Profoto A1. I have always used Nikon flashes with amazing results but the last 3 of 6 flashes I have owned had to be sent in for repair at $133.00 a pop. I still have them as they work as supplemental light but I’m really getting into the A1’s as I become more familiar with them. I really like the built in power pack, that alone will save $300 a year. The light is a little different in the fact that it throws a circular light instead of the traditional rectangular light which is great for portraits as it creates a natural vignette. The wireless remote is dead on and untethers me during running and gunning at event shoots. My assistant is able to move the light unencumbered, we add a small soft box to even the light and presto, magic with ease just happens.
