Hangin with uncle Bob!

July 9, 2010

Bob Krist, one of my three all time mentors, thru life, dvd, or just plain admiration! Not really my uncle in case you haven’t guessed, but this guy is like everybody’s uncle!

Started my flash career off with this guy about 12 years ago, always wanted to study under him, was I ever right? Oh yea! It’s like having this great editor that wants to tell you that you just blew it in the largest way, go back and make it perfect, but he don’t. Instead in his humble way, he says maybe if you did this it would look like this, very calmly!

I really hate that I had to come all the way to Maine to take his class, ( not in the least, are you kiddin’, summer in Texas vs. summer in Maine?) but it had to be done.

This guy is like the Classic Yellow book photog, ( that would be National geographic for you non believers, I mean non photogs. When he walked into the room of the first day of the class, the first words to come out of his mouth ” on the wall of Nat Geo hangs a sign that says, we publish images, not excuses, now I’m not going to say that but….”

Class started off with a few lectures and some of Bob’s profound work, some of the do’s and don’ts of travel photography and a overall theme for a week of shooting. “Now you guys go out and bring me back Mid Coast Maine.”

Every morning is filled with a lesson in travel photography, a review of images from the day before, but only after a great Maine sunrise. (wich is five am) Later on in the week we had a great location lighting class at Elmer’s farm with a crusty old cool looking sailer named Peter.

The character in this guys face was worth the price of admission alone.

Maine Media Workshops is where all this takes place, 37 years old, these guys have it down pat. This place is kinda like a summer camp for adults, or anyone that is enthusiastic about learning photography, filmmaking, and just about any type of visual media. The energy here is so intensely creative that it flows through you like wine. 200 people gathered together lunch, dinner and supper, lectures at night, all in the name of gaining and sharing more knowledge of their craft….. its phenomenal !

My take on Mid Coast Maine.
