Good and red
June 5, 2010

There’s a old saying in Photography, “if you can’t make it good, make it red.”
This comes from some older images of the Decatur high school Flamenco dancers, still one of my favorite, simply because when I arrived, I had no clue what I was going to shoot, on a limited time budget due to the short class time.
If you have ever seen these guys move,
there was not a lot of room for stands and lights. Solution, I sb-800 held by teacher, fired remotely with a pocket wizard, beam narrowed to 105, straight hard light.
Well this young lady arrived late, but when I spotted her, this was the exact shot I saw in my mind’s eye. The vail created some pleasant shadows and softened the light just enough to make it work.
For me the immediate impact of the red pulls you in and then the eyes take over from there.
Always had a special fondness for the grace and beauty of dance. The elegance, poise, flowing lines all seem to suggest what photography is all about. Now you throw a little color in the mix and it just gets better and better.

I think that’s what is important about shooting what moves you, more than likely you always wind up with something for the keepers folder!
