Dirty little light
September 29, 2009

A lot of times I will shoot into the light, two reasons, one of which being the fact that you never know what you’re going to get, (most of the time abstract) the other being, you can produce a very dramatic image when you don’t have a subject to work with.

The old masters had a term for this called “dirty light.” the reason being, shooting in this way the light is totally uncontrolled, and just seems to come in from everywhere. More than likely there will be added lens flare, (most of the time in the wrong place) but even that can be a nice touch when trying to illustrate a point. My thinking on this is it’s kind of gimmicky, and if it’s not over used, every now and then it makes a very strong tool.
