Climbing K2

July 22, 2010

Sometimes get a pretty cool challenge in feature stuff, such was the case last week when reporter Brandon Evans decided to check out the K2 mystery!

Brandon was to monitor the effects of K2 on a volunteer, as I shot the art for print section. The challenge comes from trying to make the scene look like available backlight and still get some light on the subject to reproduce in news print.

To top it off the subject didn’t really want to be identified, so mask the face but still show features.

As Brandon monitored state of subject, I’m dragging the shutter at a 1/4 of a second to enhance the black of the blacklight room, not always a great idea when your subject’s head is spinning.

Ended up with One 100 watt strip light to camera left, two backlights to camera right at white backdrop, 100 watt through a 1/8 grid from top to separate from background.

Couldn’t have done it without the genus of the graphic boy’s artwork on the backdrop.
