Brandon Thawing!
January 12, 2010
From time to time I like to share the words of friends, associates, or like minded individuals who share some of the same thoughts and feelings of the world and what’s in it.
This one is from writer/co-worker Brandon Evans, describing the thawing of one of the coldest seasons Texas has seen in several years.

A thin layer of ice stretched across the green water like a taut tarp. A white flock of gray-splotched gulls stepped carefully across a frozen inlet of Lake Bridgeport.
Boat ramps and docks met silvery solids instead of lapping waters. Shards of jagged ice lay in a line like broken bottles across the shimmering surface. Sunlight reflected diamond-like brilliance off the ice sheet. Slightly melted spots, transformed into reflective pools on the glassy surface, mirrored the brown, red and sullen shoreline.

The frozen sections of the lake resulted from record lows for North Texas and Wise County. For almost three days the temperatures remained sub-freezing, a rare phenomenon for this part of the country. It brought out endless complaints from countless cold-natured Texans.
But dealing with winter’s bitter breath makes one appreciate the eventual warmth of a spring.

Where the inlet meets the larger lake body, a stark line separates the solid sheet from the shifting fluid. Another flock of birds, this time migratory Canadian geese, congregate in a symmetrical pattern. The frigid water appears to pose them no discomfort.
Something startles the group. In unison they rise from the water, leaving a frosty wake behind. They skitter in their trademark V centimeters above the surface, blending into the water like a wave. They venture into an unknown future, confident the future will provide for them and their progeny. They look forward to coming warmth and prosperity.
Nothing short of poetry, Brandons words never cease to amaze me.
